A thousand lies a day – preventing deceit in the timeshare sector

The timeshare industry has existed for over 50 years, millions of people have bought into the timeshare dream, and huge brands such as Marriott, Hilton and Disney are major players – but it has always had a dark side, full of deceptions that persist to this day, with almost every timeshare owner and prospective buyer being subjected to multiple lies and deceits – and increasing fraud. Now a new initiative aims to ‘clean things up’.

KwikChex is an award-winning fraud prevention business, well-known for tackling a multitude of deceptions and distortions. KwikChex has also assisted many thousands of timeshare owners and worked across the entire sector – providing evidence for prosecutions of rogues and civil cases, getting refunds and resolutions for owners, and consulting at high levels with government, law enforcement, and major timeshare companies and their representative organizations regarding timeshare owner safeguarding.

But despite all the efforts and changes that have occurred over decades, reports and complaints continue to pour in about all types of businesses involved in the sector. These include the major brand timeshare companies, resale businesses, timeshare exit specialists, lawyers and claims companies.

So many lies reported from so many sources

This article is titled ‘A thousand lies a day’. It reflects and sums up the huge number of people subjected to dishonest practices connected with timeshare – from outright fraud to the lies and omissions of countless numbers of salespeople from all types of timeshare-related businesses.

Timeshare owners are bombarded with calls from resale, exit and claims businesses – many of whom are scammers – some owners tell us they receive multiple calls on a daily basis. They also receive text messages and emails from ‘predator’ businesses. KwikChex has accumulated evidence of many thousands of such contacts – and online sites with names such as Who Calls Me?, have many more references to the nuisance calls to timeshare owners.

Owners often respond to advertising online, in the printed media, and on radio and television, believing promises of help with their timeshares – often only to learn the hard way that they have been lied to.

And then we have the complaints about the salespeople actually selling timeshare. One of the biggest sources of evidence of this is the many Facebook groups that are set up by timeshare owners – including group names that feature the biggest brands in hospitality, such as Wyndham, Hilton and Marriot- check them out – some might be called ‘Wyndham Timeshare Owners’ (over 53,000 members), others are groups with ‘unhappy’ in the name. Others are more specific, like ‘Timeshare Cancellation Information’ (nearly 7,000 members). What they have in common is that people say they were lied to by sales teams. Even within groups that declare themselves as ‘happy’ timeshare owners, there are still complaints about lies. A common comment on these has been “If their resort salespeople’s lips are moving, they’re lying.”

Lie detection and swift actions to stop the deceptions

No timeshare owner should be regularly exposed to lies and scams as they have been and continue to be. No reputable business should want to be accused of deception. KwikChex, through its timeshare assistance resources, and ITOA – the new organization founded by KwikChex CEO Chris Emmins is going to lead the way in stopping the harm and hassle of timeshare lies. As a part of a ‘Whole Truth’ initiative, free resources will be provided to timeshare owners and those thinking about purchasing timeshares – and information gathered will be shared with senior executives within the timeshare sector – with the absolute objective of ensuring integrity takes a prime place in timeshare. The following will be included.

· A Q&A / clarification document process for owners to use and file reports during any and all sales meetings and calls.

· The capability of checking information concerning exits and claims

· The latest legal and consumer rights news for timeshare owners

· Check on available options for owners

This initiative will be conducted with absolute transparency, and authorities and consumer organizations, including specialist timeshare advocacy organizations such as TARDA (tarda.org) will be invited to oversee the processes.
